AEF Christmas Eve dinner
The AIDS Emergency Fund will host its 18th annual holiday dinner for people living with HIV/AIDS on Christmas Eve, Saturday, December 24. There are three seatings for the lavish dinner of turkey and all the trimmings û at noon, 1:30, and 3:30 p.m. The event is free but guests must present an invitation. Invitations are available from any of the major AIDS service organizations in the city and entitle a person with HIV/AIDS to attend and bring one guest.
AEF Executive Director Mike Smith noted that this year's event is being dedicated to the memory of David Slocombe, a longtime volunteer who died in October.
In addition to the dinner, guests will have the opportunity to meet Santa. Neil Figurelli, coordinator of this year's event, noted that entertainment will be provided by several local performers, including the Carpenters singing group, Trauma Flintstone, pianist Richard Linc, and "the Young Men" û Tyler Krikonian, Marshall Johnson, and Kurt Johnson û who have been singing for at the dinner since they were kids and now are in college.
The dinner is underwritten by corporate sponsors, including Steve Silver's Beach Blanket Babylon, the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund, the Academy of Friends, and the Eli and Mae Rosen Foundation. Additionally, Liz Baldwin of Bon Appetit Management Company has donated 80 turkeys.
The event takes place in the Green Room at the War Memorial Building, 401 Van Ness Avenue.
Tenderloin Tessie's dinner
Toby Nelson and the volunteers with Tenderloin Tessie's will once again serve up a full holiday dinner on Christmas Day, Sunday, December 25, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church, 1187 Franklin Street at Geary.
Nelson said attendees will receive gift bags and there will be toys for the kids. Volunteers are welcome to help out on the day of the event, and food and cash donations are always appreciated. To volunteer or donate, call Nelson at (415) 255-7503.
Nelson noted that since Tenderloin Tessie's Thanksgiving dinner last month, the organization received an award from Mayor Gavin Newsom for its more than 30 years of providing meals to those in need.
Glide
Glide Memorial United Methodist Church is having celebration services Sunday, December 25 with the Reverend Cecil Williams at 9 and 11 a.m. The church is also preparing to serve thousands of meals on Sunday. A special breakfast will be served from 7 to 8:30 a.m., while the annual holiday dinner will be served from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
All events take place at the church, 330 Ellis Street at Taylor.
Glide officials noted that cash donations are especially needed and can be made online at www.glide.org.
SFGMCI get-together
The San Francisco Gay Men's Community Initiative is having a holiday get-together for anyone who does not have plans on Christmas Day and wants to spend some time with others who will be going out to dinner, a movie, and then hitting the town. Participants pay for themselves.
Those interested in joining in the festivities should meet at Mel's Diner, 801 Mission Street, between 4:30 and 5 p.m. Sunday, December 25 (Dinner at Mel's runs approximately $12-$20). Following dinner, the group plans to go across the street to Loews Theatres in the Metreon (4th and Mission) to see the 7:30 p.m. showing of The Producers (cost of the movie runs approximately $10-$11). After the movie, those who are interested will head to the Castro to spread holiday cheer.
