The National Institutes of Health have estimated that at least 75 percent of adults with HIV/AIDS have experienced or are at risk of experiencing hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo, and speech, language, or cognitive problems.
In response to the NIH findings, Under One Roof will provide the following three events this month. All are free and open to the public and take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the store, located at 549 Castro Street, between 18th and 19th streets.
- Sunday, August 5: Free hearing screenings will be provided by Larry Eng, an audiologist from Golden Gate Hearing Services. Westone will provide free disposable earplugs which help prevent damage from loud music and noise. Last year the Bay Area Reporter ran an extensive series on hearing loss as it relates to dance clubs, which included the recommendation that people who frequent dance clubs wear earplugs.
- Sunday, August 12: John L. Darby, chair of the administrative committee of the California Telephone Access Program and a member of the outreach staff of CTAP, will demonstrate the free special telephone equipment and services available to people with functional limitations of hearing, speech, vision, mobility, and cognition.
- Sunday, August 19: Lisa K. Breakey, a speech pathologist, will share information about the prevention or treatment of speech, language, and cognitive problems that might affect the return to work or general safety of people with HIV/AIDS.
For more information on any of these upcoming events, call Lisa Breakey at (408) 297-9740.
