HellBall V gives money to Stop AIDS Project

Bay Area Reporter - December 7, 2000
Terry Beswick

HellBall 2000, the fifth annual AIDS Halloween fundraiser organized by the nonprofit New Heritage Foundation, raised $22,500 this year for the Stop AIDS Project.

"It will help in the development of all our HIV prevention programs," said Brian Byrdsong, development director for the Stop AIDS Project. "Overall, the event was a huge success. Everyone had a lot of fun and it was a good cause, so it was really two for one."

New Heritage works year-round solely to produce HellBall as a fundraiser for local AIDS organizations. HellBall is run almost entirely by volunteers.

On one of the rainiest nights of the year, an estimated 2,500 people paid to attend the main October 28 event, a drop-off of about 5 percent from last year.

New Heritage's board of directors report that total revenues for HellBall 2000 and ancillary events totaled $180,332, while total expenses came to $157,832. Corporate sponsorships increased from $12,500 last year to $40,000 this year, and the board hopes to have future HellBall events entirely underwritten so that the event can grow in size and increase contributions to community organizations.
