First HIV/hep C prison speak-out Nov. 2

Bay Area Reporter - October 26, 2000
Katie Szymanski

The first speak-out on HIV and hepatitis C in prison, "A Standard of Care that is Killing Prisoners," will be held on Thursday, November 2, at St. Paulus Church, 930 Gough Street (between Turk and Eddy) in San Francisco. Sponsored by the HIV in Prison Committee of California Prison Focus, the evening begins at 6:30 p.m. and will include testimony from former prisoners living with HIV and hepatitis C, and statements from prisoner advocates and community activists concerned about the spread of these two epidemics and lack of care provided to the affected population.

Topics to be discussed include the alarming rate at which prisoners are co-infected with HIV and hep C (up to 85 percent); a follow up to the BCL Laboratories scandal (where a contracted facility admitted to faking HIV test results for prisoners); and the lack of education and treatment available to those inside.

Anyone interested in the discussion and/or joining efforts to combat medical abuse and neglect is welcome to attend. The event is free.
