The Bay Area Reporter - Friday, April 30, 1999
Mark Norby
"The panel will focus on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)," says Betsy Johnsen of the AIDS Legal Referral Panel (ALRP), "and will deal with rights to employment, housing and access to public services for those living with HIV or AIDS, as well as those living with mental illness or other diseases that affect one's ability to gain employment and housing opportunities."
The first two hours will be dedicated to employment rights and to questions concerning reentering the work force. The last hour will handle the hurdles to overcome in the search for and in the retention of local housing. Speakers include ALRP housing attorney Peter Kerns, employment law expert Sarah Colby, project attorney Claudia Center, as well as experts from San Francisco Public Library's law and public policy program, and the James C. Hormel Gay and Lesbian Center of the San Francisco New Main Library.
While Saturday's program mainly emphasizes issues faced by people living with HIV/AIDS or mental illness, concepts to be presented by the panel are useful to those living with most types of disabilities, and all are welcome to attend. The Koret Auditorium is located adjacent the library's Grove and Hyde street entrance. For more information, call ALRP at (415) 248-3969.
