Fla. doctor, assistants sentenced in Medicare sham

Associated Press - August 8, 2009

MIAMI -- A doctor and physician's assistant in Miami have been sentenced to eight years in prison in an $11 million Medicare fraud scheme.

U.S. District Judge Ursula Ungaro on Friday also ordered 65-year-old Dr. Keith Russell to pay back the government $3.1 million, and 50-year-old Jorge Luis Pacheco to repay $2.6 million. Another physician's assistant, 43-year-old Eda Marietta Milanes, was sentenced to five years in prison and $3.1 million in restitution.

The three and another Miami physician were convicted in March after a federal probe.

They are among a growing host of health care providers in South Florida bilking the federal health system out of millions in false claims for bogus HIV treatment.
