Miami man gets stiff sentence for Medicare scam

Associated Press - December 18, 2008

MIAMI - A Miami physician's assistant has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for his role in an HIV infusion scheme that bilked $119 million from Medicare.

Thomas McKenzie, 53, was sentenced Thursday after he pleaded guilty in September to one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and submitting false claims to the U.S. McKenzie admitted he trained multiple doctors on how to make clinic records appear legitimate so they could bill Medicare for infusion drugs that patients didn't really need.

McKenzie worked at 11 clinics run by the Benitez brothers. Authorities believe the brothers fled to Cuba after they were indicted this year.

Another Miami doctor was sentenced Wednesday to 30 years in prison - one of the stiffest penalties given for Medicare fraud.
