Zambian girl awarded Children's Peace Prize in Hague

Associated Press - Sunday, December 16, 2007

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands: A 16-year-old girl from Zambia won the 2007 International Children's Peace Prize for her efforts to help educate children in her homeland, the organization that awards the prize said Sunday.

The award, which includes a 100,000 euros (US$145,000) grant, was established by the Amsterdam-based KidsRights Foundation in 2005.

The winner, Thandiwe Chama, comes from the Zambian capital, Lusaka. When she was 8 years old, she began lobbying for better school facilities there after her own school was closed because of a shortage of teachers, KidsRights said in a statement.

She has since begun lecturing in churches on the dangers of HIV/AIDS and speaking out against corrupt officials, but continues to be an activist for children's right to education, it said.

Irish singer Bob Geldof gave the award to Chama in the ceremonial 13th century "Hall of Knights" in The Hague.
