Plainview: More Patients Alerted

Associated Press - December 13, 2007

About 8,500 additional patients of a Long Island doctor will be advised to get tested for blood-borne diseases as an inquiry into his practice expands, the stateÆs Department of Health says. The agency initially told 628 patients of the doctor, Harvey S. Finkelstein, an anesthesiologist with a practice in Plainview, that they might be at risk for hepatitis and H.I.V. Health officials have said he dipped syringes more than once into vials of medicine, contaminating the drugs and infecting at least one person with hepatitis. Dr. Finkelstein says he has changed his technique.
