Saturday is World AIDS Day, an effort to increase awareness of the disease.
Texas Department of State Health Services Commissioner David Lakey says HIV can affect anyone.
The physician says it's important that people be educated about the risks, know their HIV status and get tested if they're unsure.
The agency reports about 4,500 cases of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, are diagnosed in Texas each year.
Figures released Friday indicate 60,571 Texans are living with HIV or AIDS, which is a 33 percent increase since 2002.
