44 count federal indictment unsealed

CONCORD, N.H. - Federal authorities have unsealed a 44-count indictment against a New Hampshire woman and four Californians on fraud and conspiracy charges involving a drug used to treat people infected with HIV.

U.S. Attorney Tom Colantuono said the indictment charges Beth Handy of Milford and the four Californians with wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to launder money, conspiracy to illegally sell medicine wholesale and falsifying paperwork.

The indictment alleges the five illegally bought Serostim, a drug used to treat HIV, and then illegalluy distributed the drug on the wholesale market using falsified paperword. The indictment alleges the scheme generated $962,985 in illegal proceeds.

The charges carry prison sentences ranging from five to 30 years.

Serostim is an injectable drug made by Serono Inc. of Rockland, Mass. It is used to treat a wasting syndrome in HIV patients.

The four Californians indicted are: attorney Robert McFadden of Palm Springs, Robert Hatch of LaQuinta, Boaz BenMoshe of Palm Springs and Ofer Lupovitz of Palm Springs.
