AIDS research program at U of M to close due to lack of funding

Associated Press - December 20, 2006

ST. PAUL - After 20 years of running clinical trials, an AIDS research program at the University of Minnesota is closing due to a cut in funding from the National Institutes of Health.

The NIH has cut back on grants for domestic research for HIV and AIDS, and instead plans to perform clinical trials in developing nations.

"The money is probably disappearing because there are other priorities that are deemed more important, either perceived or real. Example, bioterrorism. Example, avian flu," said Hank Belfour, principal investigator for the research program at the University of Minnesota. "And I think that although these are real threats, they're not here. HIV is here."

Belfour said the people who are currently being treated through the clinical trials will be able to stay on their treatment program. He's not sure how that will be funded, but said it would happen "in some way or other."
