U.S. Gov't Consultant Found Dead in Guyana

Associated Press - December 11, 2005

GEORGETOWN, Guyana - The body of an American consultant for the U.S. government's overseas aid agency was found in his hotel room in this South American country, and police said Sunday they suspect homicide.

Hotel staff found the body of Hubert Daniel Thompson, 55, on a mattress in his room late Saturday at the Le Meridien Pegasus Hotel in Georgetown, Guyana's capital, Police Chief Winston Felix said. Felix said there had been no arrests.

"What we know is that his head was bashed in and he was found on a mattress on the ground," Felix said.

U.S. Embassy spokeswoman Christine Meyer said Thompson, of Staunton, Va., was a technical adviser hired by the U.S. Agency for International Development to work on an HIV/AIDS project.

Meyer said Thompson was working for USAID on behalf of John Snow Inc., a health care consulting firm based in Boston. She said it was Thompson's second visit to the English-speaking country this year.

Guyana's Health Ministry said Thompson arrived two weeks ago to help improve storage facilities for drugs used to treat people with AIDS and other illnesses.
