Serbia-Montenegro Pres:Hope For Bulgarian Nurses In Libya

Associated Press - September 30, 2004

BELGRADE (AP) - Serbia-Montenegro's president Thursday said "there is hope" for five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death in Libya, hinting at progress in talks to have their sentences reviewed.

President Svetozar Marovic and former Yugoslav President Zoran Lilic have been mediating in negotiations between Bulgaria and Libya in an attempt to win a review of the sentences of the five, who along with a Palestinian doctor have been convicted of deliberately infecting more than 400 Libyan children with the AIDS virus. They were sentenced to death in May.

Foreign experts and critics say the trial, which is in the appeal stage, was fraught with irregularities.

Marovic Thursday told the Beta news agency, "I can say with full responsibility that there is hope."

He said Lilic has presented proposals to Bulgarian and Libyan leaders.

"That is the key, which gives hope for the Bulgarian citizens, but it also calls for full engagement by the authorities in Sofia (the Bulgarian capital)."

Marovic gave no details about the possible deal but said "it was received well and with understanding by our Libyan friends." He said it must now be reviewed by Bulgarian leaders.

Bulgarian authorities had asked Marovic and Lilic - who are known to have good ties with the Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi - to mediate in the case, which has drawn international condemnation of Libya.
