"First of all, I'm not sick. I have to correct you there," Johnson told a reporter Thursday as he appeared at a supermarket to meet fans and sign autographs.
"I feel wonderful. It's a situation that after 10 years ... everything is great, wonderful. God has kept me healthy and strong."
Johnson, who starred at Lansing Everett High School and led Michigan State to an NCAA championship, was back in his hometown to lead his all-star team against the Spartans in an exhibition game Friday night.
He dismissed questions about his health, in favor of reminiscing about old coaching and playing friends - names familiar to the crowd of shoppers. But he said there were several reasons he hasn't succumbed to AIDS.
"I think it's everything," he said. "You can't say it's one (thing). The medicine has done its thing, I think I've done my part, and God has done his part.
"It's mind over matter, too. I've never felt I would be sick or get sick. I thought I would be here. So I'm here, and I'm still going and I'll be out there playing tomorrow."
Johnson, 42, has always been a well-loved local celebrity, since he was a gangly teen star, a court magician for Michigan State and a polished professional for the Los Angeles Lakers.
He has returned the Lansing area's affection, staying close to local coaches and players.
"This is where it all started," he said as he entered the supermarket where he answered questions and mingled with fans. "I shopped here. It's great to be home."
And he still bleeds a little Green and White, predicting MSU will return to powerhouse status on the court.
"Tom Izzo has one of the best programs in America," he said, referring to the Spartans' coach.
"I think there is Duke and then Michigan State. Year in and year out, we're going to be good.
