AIDS patient in final stages of disease admits molesting 15-year-old girl

Associated Press - September 20, 2001

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) A 40-year-old man in the final stages of AIDS has pleaded guilty to molesting a 15-year-old girl.

Prosecutor George Lipscomb said the incident occurred Feb. 12 after the girl fled "a bad home life" and called Hector L. Ayala. He took her to his apartment and engaged in sexual contact with her.

"She was looking for him to take her away, to look for her father in Florida," Lipscomb said. "He took advantage of that. He did prey on her."

Defense attorney Jose Guzman said the girl was aware of Ayala's disease and consented to the sexual activity, although Georgia's law doesn't allow a minor to give consent until age 16.

Ayala faces 10 years in prison. Lipscomb said the teen-ager has been tested for the HIV virus and there is no indication she has it. She will continue to be tested, however.
