Center to Study Health Disparities

Associated Press - Tuesday October 31, 2000

WASHINGTON (AP) - Congress has directed the National Institutes of Health to establish a center to study health disparities among the nation's minority populations.

The House late Tuesday approved the bill by voice, sending it to the president for his signature. The Senate passed it earlier this week. Sponsors noted that black and Hispanic Americans often have significantly higher rates of heart disease, cancer, infant mortality, diabetes, HIV/AIDs and other illnesses.

"We have a moral obligation, a duty and a responsibility, to find effective ways to eliminate these disparities," said Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga. "Equal access to health care is not a privilege, it is a fundamental right."

The National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities is to coordinate minority health disparity research and information and to identify areas where NIH studies into minority health problems are insufficient.

The bill is S. 1880. On the Net: Congress: http://thomas.loc.gov/
