New York Firms Recall 25,000 Tons of Meat

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A pair of New York firms have announced recalls of about 25,000 tons of hot dogs, sandwich meats and chicken nuggets, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Friday.

Levonian Brothers Inc. of Troy, N.Y., is voluntarily recalling 19,000 pounds of hot dogs, ham, salami, roast beef, corned beef and pastrami for possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause listeriosis, an uncommon, but potentially fatal disease, the USDA said.

The products were stamped "Est. 5065" inside the USDA seal of inspection and had production date codes of July 25 or July 26.

Meanwhile, Ahava Products Corp. of Brooklyn is voluntarily recalling about 6,000 tons of chicken nuggets for possible salmonella contamination. The product was imported from Israel and distributed in the New York City area and California.

Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, which can be life-threatening, especially for infants, the frail or elderly and persons with chronic disease, HIV or taking chemotherapy.

The recalled products are two-pound packages of "Mama's Chickens" chicken nuggets. The packages' labels bear the Israeli plant code "186 IL" and a production date of June 11.
