China Bans Groundbreaking Condom Ad

The Associated Press - Thursday, December 2, 1999

BEIJING -- China has pulled its first nationally televised advertisement promoting condoms to prevent AIDS because the announcement violated a ban on advertising sex products, state media reported Thursday.

The advertisement aired on Sunday and Monday on China Central Television's Channel 1, the premier broadcast station in the entirely state-run media. The State Administration for Industry and Commerce banned the ad on Tuesday citing the prohibition on promoting sexual aids, the state-run China Daily reported.

While China's health care experts have long recognized the dangers of AIDS in such a young and mobile society, the government has only recently begun allowing frank public discussion of the disease. China has an estimated 400,000 people infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

On World AIDS Day Wednesday, the government launched a public awareness campaign. The condom ad was seen as a breakthrough in efforts to reach large numbers of Chinese and confront traditional taboos against discussing sex and contraceptives.
