Candidates On The Issues: AIDS Spending

The Associated Press Tuesday, September 17, 1996 4:20 pm EDT

Here are the responses of the major presidential candidates to the question: "Would you maintain, increase or decrease federal research grants to universities and hospitals searching for a cure or more effective measures against AIDS?"

Bill Clinton: "Preventing HIV infection and finding a cure for AIDS is a top priority. ... That is why we have increased overall AIDS funding by nearly 40 percent, including Ryan White CARE assistance for outpatient care. These policies have already achieved remarkable success: Thanks to recent scientific advances, people with HIV and AIDS live twice as long as they did two years ago; the United States now approves AIDS drugs faster than any European nation. We must not slow the battle to fight HIV and AIDS."

Bob Dole: "We must do everything possible to foster and encourage research aimed at stopping the proliferation of this disease. That is why I supported the Ryan White Act, which provides federal assistance for AIDS research."

Ross Perot: "AIDS is taking a tragic toll on our nation. This plague must be attacked at every level: education, prevention, and accelerated research. We need to find the cure as soon as possible."
