Soldier Charged In HIV Case

The Associated Press - Dec 13, 1995; 50 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, NY 10020.

FORT DRUM, N.Y. (AP) -- An HIV-infected soldier was charged with assault after allegedly having unprotected sex with a female soldier without first notifying her of his condition, Army officials said Wednesday.

Spc. Kevin L. Barrows violated Defense Department rules for military members who have tested positive for the virus that causes AIDS, according to a statement from Fort Drum officials.

The case remains under investigation by the Army Criminal Investigation Detachment, the statement said. Medical personnel are conducting an investigation to determine whether others were exposed or are at risk.

The 10th Mountain Division soldier is a member of the 41st Engineer Battalion. Barrows, who was charged Tuesday, could face a court-martial.
