Officials in the former Soviet republic said they have not encountered anyone who contracted the disease at a hairdressing salon. But they said poor sterilization of salon instruments puts customers at risk.
Thirty-four of 133 hair salons in Odessa were shut recently. Officials said they would be reopened when they meet health requirements.
"Theoretically it is possible for people to get AIDS through pedicures, manicures and shaves," Ukrainian AIDS specialist Larysa Bochkova said Thursday.
"The instruments often become dull from the sterilizing fluid and for this reason they are not very popular with hairdressers," Bochkova said.
The number of registered cases of people infected with the AIDS virus in Odessa jumped over the month of November from 369 to 572, medical officials in the southern port city said.
They said most of the affected people were drug users.
Although there are still relatively few AIDS cases in Ukraine, the number is rising steeply. A total of 788 new cases of AIDS infection were registered in the first 10 months of this year, compared with 44 new cases registered in all of 1944.
