China AIDS Watch Underway

The Associated Press, Mon, 19 Dec 94

BEIJING (AP) -- The discovery that three recent blood donors in Beijing and Shanghai were carrying the AIDS virus is leading to calls for nationwide checks of blood donors, an official report said Monday.

Unlike most Western countries, China has no policy of testing blood donors for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Instead, China's anti-AIDS measures have mostly been aimed at testing foreigners, people with frequent contacts with foreigners and intravenous drug users.

The report in the Beijing Youth News did not give any details about the recent discovery. It did not say whether they were in addition to the 1,453 people who have tested positive for AIDS in China since 1985.

But the report cited government information submitted to the Asian Development Bank that said 83 to 196 of China's blood donors carry the AIDS virus. It did not say how big China's pool of blood donors is.
