The former Sarah Ferguson, estranged wife of Britain's Prince Andrew, was in Portugal to help raise money for an AIDS awareness campaign.
Asked by Portugal's Diario de Noticias if she had had a test for the HIV virus, the duchess reportedly responded, "Of course! Once before I was married and once before becoming pregnant."
A report by the British agency Press Association differed slightly, saying the first HIV test was before she became pregnant with her first child and the second for an insurance policy about a year ago. The discrepancy could not immediately be resolved.
At the time of her marriage to Prince Andrew in 1986, when she was 26, Sarah Ferguson's three-year relationship with racing driver Paddy McNally was acknowledged.
Her husband had been photographed with an array of single women when he was a bachelor, including American actress Koo Stark, who once appeared in soft-porn movies.
The couple's first child, Princess Beatrice, was born in 1988. A second daughter, Princess Eugenie, was born in 1990. The couple separated in March 1992.
In Britain, news of the duchess' AIDS tests played prominently in the evening broadcasts, and the Evening Standard newspaper put the story on its front page with a banner headline.
