$15 million for Germans who got AIDS through transfusions

San Francisco Chronicle - Saturday, November 13, 1993

Bonn - Germany will pay $15 million in aid over the next three years to AIDS patients infected by transfusions, officials said yesterday, as the government moved to counter criticism of its handling of the tainted blood scandal.

The country is in the throes of a major AIDS scare after two companies were recently discovered to have distributed blood products tainted with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

At least six people are believed to have been infected from the companies' blood products.

About 1,500 people in Germany with HIV have been infected from blood products since 1984. Health authorities began testing blood for the virus in 1985.

Under the new package, 1,200 people infected with HIV will receive about $600 a month, and 300 suffering from AIDS will receive $1,200, said Roland Sauer, spokesman for the government committee investigating the scandal.

Germany's pharmaceutical industry will contribute $1.2 million to the fund, Sauer said, with the rest of the money coming from federal and state governments.
