John Michael Fountain, 21, was arrested Tuesday night at a West Hollywood bar after trying to pick up an envelope with the money, the district attorney's office said.
At his arraignment yesterday, he pleaded not guilty to one count each of sending a threatening letter for extortion and attempted extortion. Municipal Court Judge Glenette Blackwell set bail at $5,000 and ordered a preliminary hearing August 28.
"He told us he was a Harvard University student and was in Los Angeles for the summer. He said he was broke and needed the money because he was getting ready to go back to school," said Deputy District Attorney Deborah Kranze.
She said Fountain was working for the doctor's accountant when he found out that the doctor had tested positive for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
