Allan Grossman, a member of the study panel and attorney for the Board of Dentistry, said the medical experts agreed that rules requiring the use of gloves, masks, gowns and protective eyewear -- if followed -- will prevent the spread of the highly contagious Hepatitis B virus and the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
However, the panel will recommend the Board of Dentistry require greater use of masks and eye protection during dental procedures like drilling or where there could be splashing, he said.
The panel will also recommend that the board require dentists and dental technicians to undergo continuing AIDS education every two years as part of license renewal, Grossman said.
Kimberly Bergalis, 22, of Fort Pierce has claimed that she contracted the AIDS virus from her dentist while having two wisdom teeth pulled in December 1987. The dentist, who later died of an AIDS-related disease, wore gloves and a mask during the procedure.
Laurie Cain, a spokeswoman for the Department of Professional Regulation, said the panel was formed in response to increased concerns about AIDS transmission in professional settings, not directly in response to the Bergalis case.
Grossman said the panel will also consider a Centers for Disease Control report on sterilization and barrier methods, which is expected in early January.
