3 demos help gay lawyer 'get story out'

The Associated Press - Tuesday, February 7, 1989

Sacramento - A gay San Francisco lawyer's hunger strike to protest alleged job discrimination against gays and people infected with AIDS, got a boost yesterday from three Democratic legislators.

Assemblymen John Burton of San Francisco, Terry Friedman of Sherman Oaks and John Vasconcellos of San Jose called a Capitol press conference with attorney Stuart McDonald to, in Burton's words, "help him get his story out."

McDonald, 33, started fasting on January 3 to raise public awareness of "the desperation that characterizes the lives of thousands of gays who suffer in silence with the HIV virus."

Deukmejian's press secretary, Kevin Brett, said the governor "is certainly aware of Mr. McDonald's hunger strike." He said that the chief of Deukmejian's AIDS office met with McDonald but added that the governor stands behind his reasons for vetoing bills related to discrimination against homosexuals and people infected with the AIDS virus.

Deukmejian contends that federal law already prohibits such discrimination.
