The city police captured one of them driving a stolen car but three were still at large early today.
The four prisoners freed themselves from the maximum security prison by cutting through wire mesh over a window, then dropping from the window to a sidewalk about eight feet below, said the State Corrections Commissioner, Gary Hilton.
The escape was reported at about 10 P.M. Descriptions of the escapees broadcast by the Trenton police said one was serving time for a parole violation, another for kidnapping, a third for robbery and the last for burglary.
One of the escapees was captured at 10:30 P.M. without a struggle, Sgt, Robert Tedder of the Trenton police said, when he was pulled over by officers who were not yet aware of the prison break acting on the stolen-car report.
