The former officer, Richard Bell, 47 years old, of 500 East 77th Street, was convicted by State Supreme Court Justice Myriam Altman after a five-hour nonjury trial in Manhattan.
Mr. Bell was indicted in February with five other men on charges involving the operation of the two sex clubs in Greenwich Village. Four of the five pleaded guilty last week. The fifth is believed to have fled to Ireland to escape prosecution, Charles Testagrossa, an assistant state attorney general, said.
The Mine Shaft, a bar for homosexuals, was closed by the city in November 1985 during an anti-AIDS crackdown on high-risk sex in public. Hell Fire, a club for heterosexuals, closed voluntarily at the same time.
