Because of AIDS, Prostitutes Are Urged Not to Give Blood

Associated Press - November 4, 1986

WASHINGTON, Nov. 4 - The Food and Drug Administration, seeking to further reduce the risk of AIDS, has added prostitutes and their recent heterosexual customers to its list of those who should not donate blood.

New recommendations sent Monday to all registered blood collection agencies say men and women should be asked not to donate blood if they have been active as prostitutes at any time since 1977, said William Grigg, a spokesman for the agency. The recommendations also say any heterosexual who has been a customer or sexual partner of a prostitute within six months should not donate blood or blood products.
