Parents Drop Effort To Bar AIDS Student

The New York Times - July 18, 1986

INDIANAPOLIS, July 18 - A group of parents who fought to keep a 14-year-old AIDS victim out of school has decided to end its battle, the group's attorney said today.

The student, Ryan White, was barred by school officials one year ago from attending classes at Western Middle School in the suburb of Kokomo because of fears that the disease could be transmitted.

He returned on April 10 when a state judge dissolved an injunction banning the boy from classes.

The Indiana Court of Appeals today rejected the parents' appeal of the judge's ruling on procedural grounds.

David Rosselot, attorney for the parents' group, said they asked him Tuesday to drop the action.

"Nobody feels any differently about AIDS in the classroom," he said. "The finances just happened to be the biggest stumbling block."
