Newark to Check Officers for AIDS

The New York Times - November 22, 1985

NEWARK, Nov. 22 - The city has agreed to examine all police officers who came in contact with a detective who died this week after suffering from AIDS for the last year.

The detective, Edwin Padilla, a seven-year veteran of the force, died Monday morning, according to Lieut. Armando Fontura. "He was diagnosed four months ago by the police surgeon as having AIDS, but I don't know if he died from that," Lieutenant Fontura said.

After Detective Padilla's death, the police union asked the department to pay for examinations for all officers who had come in contact with him. Lieutenant Fontura said the department had agreed to the request.
