The suit - one of the nation's first dealing with bias against people with acquired immune deficiency syndrome - was filed in September 1983 on behalf of Dr. Joseph A. Sonnabend.
Dr. Sonnabend, a specialist in infectious dieseases, had practiced at 49 West 12th Street for seven years until he was told his lease was not being renewed. He said the head of the co-op's board had told him residents feared his patients would make them sick or reduce apartment values.
