THE CITY; AIDS Unit To Open For State Inmates

Associated Press - September 25, 1984

The state prison system is planning to provide special care at Metropolitan Hospital for inmates who are AIDS patients, the city's Health and Hospitals Corporation announced in a statement yesterday.

The special unit, the announcement said, will be the first of its kind in the nation to deal with acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

It is to be staffed by the Health and Hospitals Corporation at the hospital, at First Avenue and 97th Street.

The announcement said the Department of Correctional Services lacked adequate facilities for the specialized care required by AIDS patients.

Operating costs, construction costs and equipment costs for the unit, which is to be able to care for 22 patients at a time, will be paid by the state. For security reasons, the AIDS unit will be isolated on a separate floor of the hospital. Construction is to begin in January, and the unit is expected to be ready for patients six months later.
