Death of Cook Studied As Possible AIDS Case

Associated Press - June 19, 1983

Doctors are investigating whether a 45-year-old cook at the Queens House of Detention for Men who died of pneumonia was a victim of AIDS, a spokesman for the Department of Correction said yesterday.

The man, whose identity was not revealed, died Thursday, according to Edward Hershey, the spokesman.

"There is no reason to believe that any threat to the staff or inmates of the Queens facility exists," he said.

Those in a high-risk group for the disorder, known as acquired immune deficiency syndrome, are homosexual men, intravenous drug users, hemophiliacs who require regular blood transfusions and Haitians. Federal authorities have said that AIDS does not seem to be transmitted by air or casual contact.

"Medical authorities tell us that his is a suspected AIDS case," Mr. Hershey said of the cook's death. "We have informed our staff of these facts and we have reiterated that the best medical opinions hold that the handling of food has no relationship to the transmission of AIDS."

The president of the Correction Officers Benevolent Association, Philip Seelig, said in reaction that he wanted the city to test all prison employees to determine whether any have AIDS.
