Gonorrhea, a form of venereal disease, peaked in the county in 1980 when 52,851 cases were reported.
In 1982 that dropped to 39,834, the lowest since 1974.
"It's the most significant change I've seen since I started" in 1972, said Paul Poppe, coordinator of the county's venereal disease program. "I would have to think that with all the publicity surrounding AIDS it would have to have some effect on sexual activity."
He said there has been a general decline in "anonymous" sexual activity, especially among homosexuals, because of AIDS, or acquired immune deficiency syndrome, which is fatal to most of its victims.
