Washington, 27. Juni (AFP) - US-Präsident Barack Obama hat seine Landsleute aufgefordert, sich freiwillig einem Aids-Test zu unterziehen. "Ich bitte die Amerikaner, die Kontrolle über ihre eigene Gesundheit zu erlangen und sich zum Schutz derer, die sie lieben, auf HIV testen zu lassen", erklärte Obama am Samstag aus Anlass des 14. Nationalen Aidstest-Tages. Alle neuneinhalb Minuten werde in den USA ein Mensch mit Aids infiziert, sagte Obama. Die Immunseuche betreffe nicht nur Schwule oder Bisexuelle, Afro-Amerikaner oder Latinos, sondern könne jeden treffen.
In den USA leben nach Schätzungen mehr als eine Million HIV-Infizierte, mehr als 230.000 wissen nichts von ihrer Erkrankung. Obama will in einer auf sechs Jahre angelegten Initiative 63 Milliarden Dollar für die Bekämpfung gefährlicher Krankheiten wie Aids, Malaria und Tuberkulose investieren. Das Vorhaben wurde bereits von seinem Vorgänger George W. Bush gestartet.
