WASHINGTON, 27 avr 2009 (AFP) - Le président américain Barack Obama a annoncé lundi avoir choisi comme coordinateur mondial de la lutte contre le sida un professeur de médecine engagé dans ce combat depuis 25 ans.
M. Obama a annoncé la nomination à ce poste d'Eric Goosby, professeur à l'université de Californie (ouest) et chef depuis 2001 de la Fondation Pangaea Global AIDS.
Selon un communiqué de la Maison Blanche, le Dr. Goosby a joué un rôle crucial dans le développement et la mise en oeuvre de plans nationaux de traitement du sida en Afrique du Sud, au Rwanda, en Chine et en Ukraine.
Sous l'administration Clinton, il a officié comme directeur adjoint du bureau de la Maison Blanche engagé dans la lutte contre le sida.
Il jouit de relations de travail anciennes avec les organisations internationales, dit la Maison Blanche.
