Washington, 28. April (AFP) - US-Präsident Barack Obama hat einen erfahrenen Experten zu seinem Beauftragten im Kampf gegen HIV und Aids ernannt. Eric Goosby, Professor an der University of California in San Francisco, solle das US-Programm gegen Aids (PEPFAR) koordinieren, teilte das Weiße Haus am Montag (Ortszeit) in einer Erklärung mit. PEPFAR stehen mehr als 25 Milliarden Dollar (19 Milliarden Euro) zur Verfügung, um die tödliche Immunschwächekrankheit in aller Welt zu bekämpfen. Goosby leitet seit 2001 die Stiftung Pangaea Global Aids und war nach Angaben des Weißen Hauses maßgeblich an der Ausarbeitung der nationalen Anti-Aids-Programme in Südafrika, Ruanda, China und der Ukraine beteiligt.
Während der Präsidentschaft von Bill Clinton war Goosby den Angaben zufolge Vize-Direktor der Anti-Aids-Abteilung des Weißen Hauses. Zu wichtigen internationalen Institutionen wie dem UN-Aidsprogramm (UNAIDS) und der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) baute er gute Kontakte auf.
