Kapstadt, 17. März (AFP) - Im südlichen Afrika sind viele Politiker an Aids erkrankt, was einer Studie zufolge das Funktionieren der öffentlichen Institutionen bedroht. "Die Erhöhung der Sterberate könnte die lokalen Behörden lahmlegen, die jetzt schon unter fehlender Kompetenz leiden", heißt es in der am Dienstag veröffentlichten Studie des Demokratie-Instituts in Südafrika. Innerhalb der vergangenen acht Jahre sei die Hälfte der Stadt- und Gemeinderäte in Südafrika vor ihrem 50. Geburtstag gestorben. "Die Abgeordneten sterben in relativ großer Zahl und sind relativ jung. Das entspricht der allgemeinen Tendenz."
Der Studie zufolge traut sich kaum ein Politiker, seine Erkrankung öffentlich einzugestehen. "Die große Mehrheit unter ihnen denkt, dass eine Enthüllung den politischen Selbstmord bedeutet," sagte der Forscher Kondwani Chirambo. Für die Studie wurden sieben Länder im südlichen Afrika untersucht, das besonders stark unter Aids leidet.
