Pigg's Peak, 25. Juli (AFP) - Die Bevölkerung im südafrikanischen Swasiland schrumpft wegen der Immunschwächekrankheit Aids dramatisch: Ende 2007 lebten in dem zwischen Südafrika und Mosambik gelegenen Königreich nur noch rund eine Million Menschen, wie der Minister für Planung und wirtschaftliche Entwicklung, Absalom Dlamini, am Freitag in Pigg's Peak bekannt gab. Innerhalb eines Jahrzehnts sei die Bevölkerung damit um 18 Prozent geschrumpft.

Fast 40 Prozent der Bevölkerung von Swasiland leidet an Aids. Nach der Bevölkerungserhebung von 1997 wurde die Zahl der Einwohner mit 1,2 Millionen angegeben. Die örtliche Vertreterin des UN-Bevölkerungsfonds (UNFPA), Aisha Camara, kritisierte auch die hohe Kinder- und Müttersterblichkeit. In Swasiland sterben demnach 589 von 100.000 Frauen während der Geburt.
