Peking, 28. März (AFP) - Das chinesische Rote Kreuz hat sein erstes landesweites Programm zum Kampf gegen Aids gestartet. Die Kampagne sehe für alle 31 Provinzen des bevölkerungsreichsten Landes der Erde Maßnahmen zur Aufklärung und Vorbeugung der tödlichen Immunschwächekrankheit sowie Hilfe für HIV-Infizierte vor, erklärte die Hilfsorganisation am Freitag in Peking. Das Rote Kreuz hatte 1994 in der südwestchinesischen Provinz Yunnan den Kampf gegen Aids aufgenommen.
Das chinesische Gesundheitsministerium hatte im November mitgeteilt, im Land seien schätzungsweise 700.000 Menschen mit dem HI-Virus infiziert. Das Tempo der Ausbreitung habe jedoch abgenommen. Einige Fachleute halten die chinesischen Angaben für deutlich zu niedrig angesetzt. Nach UN-Schätzungen sind zwischen 30 und 50 Millionen Menschen in dem Land von einer HIV-Infektion bedroht.
