Castel Gandolfo, 24. März (AFP) - Anlässlich des Welttuberkulosetags hat Papst Benedikt XVI. in seinem Ostermontagsgebet zum Kampf gegen die Krankheit aufgerufen. Das Kirchenoberhaupt appellierte in Castel Gandolfo nahe Rom insbesondere an die katholischen Hilfsorganisationen, sich um die Kranken zu kümmern. Diejenigen, die unter Tuberkulose litten, könnten über deren Hilfe den "auferstandenen Herrn erkennen, der ihnen Heilung, Halt und Frieden" schenke, sagte er. Der Papst bekundete den Kranken seine Solidarität.

Tuberkulose ist die am häufigsten zum Tode führende behandelbare Infektionskrankheit. Einem Bericht des Robert-Koch-Instituts (RKI) zufolge erkrankten daran 2006 in Deutschland 5402 Menschen, 201 Menschen starben daran. Im gleichen Zeitraum starben weltweit mehr als 1,7 Millionen Menschen an Tuberkulose, darunter 230.000 HIV-Infizierte.
