Bush urges successor: Keep Africa focus

Agence France-Presse - February 26, 2008

WASHINGTON, Feb 26, 2008 (AFP) - US President George W. Bush on Tuesday urged all of the candidates to succeed him to make clear that they will not turn their backs on US commitments to Africa.

"Presidential candidates of both parties should make clear that engagement with Africa will be an enduring priority of the United States," he said in a speech recapping his recent five-country trip to the continent.

Bush, whose successor will be chosen in November elections, wraps up his term in January 2009. He has sharply increased US aid to Africa to fight malaria, and HIV/AIDS.

The US president returned to Washington late Thursday after travelling to Benin, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana, and Liberia was part of what he described as a "mission of mercy" to help the continent battle poverty and deadly diseases.
