Arusha, 18. Februar (AFP) - Die USA wollen Tansania beim Kampf gegen Malaria unterstützen. US-Präsident George W. Bush kündigte am Montag bei einem Besuch in der Nähe von Arusha an, in sechs Monaten werde ein Programm zur kostenlosen Verteilung von 5,2 Millionen Moskitonetzen beginnen. Damit könne jedes Kind in Tansania zwischen einem und fünf Jahren geschützt werden. Beteiligt seien an dem Programm auch die Weltbank und der Globale Fonds zur Bekämpfung von Aids, Tuberkulose und Malaria. Bei Moskitonetzen handele es sich um eines der einfachsten, aber auch effektivsten Mittel zur Prävention der Krankheit, sagte Bush weiter. Nach Angaben der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) sterben jedes Jahr 1,2 Millionen Menschen an Malaria, die meisten davon in Afrika.
