New York, 15. Februar (AFP) - Eine von U2-Sänger Bono und dem britischen Künstler Damien Hirst veranstaltete Kunstauktion zugunsten von Aids-Patienten in Afrika hat 42,5 Millionen Dollar (29,1 Millionen Euro) eingebracht. Die Versteigerung am Donnerstag in New York, an der Hollywood-Schauspieler, Supermodels und Rockstars teilnahmen, wurde als größte Wohltätigkeitsveranstaltung aller Zeiten beschrieben. Der Erlös übertraf die Erwartungen bei weitem: Optimistische Schätzungen waren von 29 Millionen Dollar ausgegangen.
Zahlreiche berühmte Künstler, unter ihnen Georg Baselitz, Jasper Jones und Jeff Koons, stifteten Werke für die Versteigerung am Valentinstag. Hirst allein stellte sieben Arbeiten zur Verfügung, die insgesamt mehr als 19 Millionen Dollar einbrachten. Zu den prominenten Käufern gehörte Supermodel Christy Turlington, anwesend waren unter anderem Tennislegende John McEnroe und Schauspieler und Regisseur Dennis Hopper. Das Geld geht an ein von den Vereinten Nationen unterstütztes Programm und soll die Versorgung tausender Aids-Patienten mit antiretroviralen Medikamenten sicherstellen.
