Hamburg, 26. Dezember (AFP) - Der irische Musiker und Afrika-Aktivist Bob Geldof hat Deutschland und Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel (CDU) für die nun auslaufende G-8-Präsidentschaft gelobt. "Es gibt nicht den Hauch eines Zweifels, dass Deutschland damit unter der Führung von Kanzlerin Merkel Hunderttausende, vielleicht sogar Millionen Menschenleben gerettet hat", sagte Geldof der "Bild"-Zeitung (Donnerstagsausgabe). Die deutsche Regierung habe ihre Entwicklungshilfe-Zusagen für Afrika 2007 massiv erhöht und in Berlin die Geberkonferenz des Globalen Fonds zur Bekämpfung von Aids, Tuberkulose und Malaria organisiert. Dort seien fast zehn Milliarden Dollar an internationalen Zusagen gemacht worden. In den vergangenen zwölf Monaten sei das Verständnis für Afrika in der Politik, Wirtschaft und Bevölkerung massiv gewachsen.
