Dakar, 1. Dezember (AFP) - Der Amerikaner Victor Mooney, der mit einer Rudertour über den Atlantik auf die Immunschwächekrankheit Aids aufmerksam machen wollte, muss seine Pläne erneut verschieben. Der 43-Jährige habe nicht genügend Sponsoren für sein Projekt "Goree Challenge" gewinnen können, erklärte sein Pressedienst am Samstag in der senegalesischen Hauptstadt Dakar. Bereits im Mai 2006 wollte er vom Senegal aus in sieben Wochen die fast 12.900 Kilometer lange Strecke nach New York rudern. Eine Stunde nach dem Start von der "Sklaveninsel" Goree vor Dakar drang jedoch Wasser in sein Boot ein. Mooney wurde von der senegalesischen Marine gerettet.
Der aus Brooklyn stammende Mooney wollte mit seiner Aktion auf das Schicksal seiner nach Amerika verschleppten Vorfahren aufmerksam machen und Geld für die Betreuung von Aids-Kranken in Afrika sammeln. Eigentlich hatte er geplant am Samstag, dem Welt-Aids-Tag, zu starten.
