NAIROBI, 6 oct 2007 (AFP) - L'archevêque de Nairobi, Mgr Ndingi Mwana'a Nzeki, connu pour sa défense des droits de l'homme, a annoncé samedi qu'il prenait sa retraite après près de 50 ans au service de l'Eglise.
Ordonné prêtre en 1961, Mgr Nzeki, 75 ans, avait pris la tête de l'Eglise kenyanne en 1997 en devenant archevêque de Nairobi.
"Je suis heureux d'avoir fait mon travail en tant qu'évêque pendant 38 ans", a-t-il déclaré en annonçant son départ.
Mgr Nzeki s'était attiré les foudres du président Daniel arap Moi dans les années 90 lorsqu'il accusait le gouvernement d'inciter à la haine tribale.
L'archevêque était également un farouche opposant de l'éducation sexuelle et de l'utilisation du préservatif comme moyen de lutte contre le VIH.
